Human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus – update

On 14, 15 and 16 February 2014, the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) of China notified WHO of nine additional laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, including one death.
Six of the nine cases are male. The age range is 4 to 84 years. Cases were reported from Anhui (2), Guangdong (5), Hunan (1), and Jiangsu (1). 2 cases are in a critical condition, 3 cases are in a severe condition and the condition of 3 cases are unknown at this point in time. Three cases are reported to have had a history of exposure to live poultry. Investigations are ongoing.

Scenes with an actor who played the devil but looked a lot like President Barack Obama have been edited out of the upcoming movie Son of God, one of the producers told The Hollywood Reporter.
"It gives me great pleasure to tell you that the devil is on the cutting-room floor. This is now a movie about Jesus, the son of God, and the devil gets no more screen time," said Roma Downey, who produced the movie with her husband, Mark Burnett.

Mass Evacuation as Volcanic eruption wrecks Indonesia

     A major volcanic eruption in Indonesia has shrouded a large swathe of the country's most heavily populated island in ash, triggering the evacuation of about 200,000 people and closing three international airports.
Indonesia's disaster agency said two people died on Friday in the overnight eruption of Java's Mount Kelud, considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes on the island.

Doctors find 44-year-old fetus in woman, 84

In a story as bizarre as it is deja vu-ish, a 44-year-old fetus has been found in an 84-year-old Brazilian woman. The Daily Mailreports by way of G1 that the discovery came last Friday, when the woman's intense stomach pains landed her in a hospital in Tocantins state in central Brazil.
X-rays revealed the unthinkable: a "stone baby." As the International Business Times explains, the rare phenomenon is known as lithopedion, in which the fetus grows and then dies outside of the uterus.

Obafemi Martins Walks The Steets With His Baby

This is the Nigerian footballer’s third child, and his first with Italian football star Mario Balotelli‘s elder sister, Abigail Barwuah. “He’s so handsome. I heard he plays for the Azkals,” gushed mother-of-four Darilyn Bascug, referring to the Philippines’ national football team.
Shortly after Beckham’s arrival, another woman from the area approached an AFP reporter and asked timidly: “Is that man a celebrity?”

Nigeria drops again in FIFA ranking

Nigeria have slipped a second consecutive time in 2014 in the latest FIFA World ranking released on Thursday.
According to the February ranking, the Super Eagles went down one spot to 8th position in Africa from 7th in January.
The Stephen Keshi-led side also dropped to 47th from its 41st spot in the world last month.
Ivory Coast maintained the top spot on the continent, while Algeria displaced Ghana in the second position. Cape Verde moved from 5th to 3rd place, as the Black Stars, Egypt, Tunisia, and Cameroon sit in the top seven above Nigeria.
Mali dropped from 6th to the 9th spot, while South Africa move two steps backwards to 12th.
Spain, Germany and Argentina held on to the top three in the world, while Portugal displaced Colombia in the 4th spot.
It would be recalled that Nigeria dropped four places in January in the global ranking.

 Reports Say Michael Schumacher Struck With PneumoniaFormula One Champion Michael Schumacher has reportedly contracted pneumonia, say doctors.

The seven-time German world champion has been in a coma since his December 29 ski accident, when he badly injured his head, causing serious swelling of the brain.


According to News.com.au, pneumonia- a respiratory condition where there is inflammation of the lungs- is usually caused by an infection, such as from a virus, bacteria or fungus, and can be life-threatening for people in Schumacher's condition

Jonathan sacks Oduah, three other ministers

Less than 48 hours after ordering his Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, to resign, President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday sacked four ministers from the Federal Executive Council.
The affected persons are the ministers of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah; Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godsday Orubebe; Police Affairs, Navy Cpt. Caleb Olubolade; and the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama.
All the ministers, except Oduah, attended the FEC meeting on Wednesday at which Jonathan announced their exit.

At last, Jonathan sacks aviation minister, Oduah, three others

Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella OduahPresident Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday finally sacked the embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah.
Others affected were Caleb Olubolade (Police Affairs); Godsday Orubebe (Niger Delta); and Yerima Ngama (State, Finance).
“They were dropped, they did not resign,” a cabinet source told Punch correspondent.
Oduah’s approval for the purchase of two bullet-proof cars for N255m caused public outrage in the country with many Nigerians calling for her removal and prosecution.

Herbalists [Tradional Worshippers] demands 3 seats at the National Conference


Traditional worshipers under the auspices of African Traditional Religion in Nigeria are demanding representation at the proposed National Conference.

The group have lamented their exclusion by the Federal Government,saying that their exclusion from the dialogue would haunt the country in many years to come.

Speaking on behalf of the African Traditional Religion, Prof. Idowu Odeyemi, President of International Council for Ifa (African) Religion and Dean, School of Earth and Mineral Sciences at the Federal University of Technology, Akure said, "Most disturbing and perplexing of this arrangement is the representation of other religious groups. In the listing, six "Muslim” leaders and six “Christian” leaders, each representing each of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, were invited.

A spiritual prophet was caught pants down with a female church member in Lagos.

The prophet identified as  I.T Adewoye in his seventies is one of the  spiritual leaders in Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church Worldwide, and things may turn out sour as a result of his alleged  uncontrolled sexual appetite.

According to reports, Adewoye who is the founder of “Ayo Ni O”at the at the Idimu District in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State was caught by the husband of his mistress at her matrimonial home after months of suspicion.

It was gathered  that  her husband raised an alarm and took photos of the prophet and his wife both naked, after which he dragged the prophet to a police station at Idimu where he was begged not to press charges.

Visitors gaped as scores of helmet-wearing keepers surrounded the "gorilla" with cars and nets. Staff then pretended to tranquilize their coworker, who swooned dramatically and collapsed to the ground.

Two women who say they were fathered by South Africa's former President Nelson Mandela have sought to be acknowledged by his estate, local media reported, citing an attorney dealing with his will.
The Mail & Guardian newspaper reported on Monday that family representatives of Onica Mothoa and Mpho Pule contacted Michael Katz, one of two attorneys appointed by the estate's executors to handle matters surrounding Mandela's will.

Africa 'Scores killed' in Algeria army plane crash


A military transport plane has crashed in eastern Algeria, killing 103 people, an Algerian security source said.
The C-130 Hercules aircraft, which was flying to the eastern city of Constantine crashed on Tuesday "in poor weather conditions" in Oum El Bouaghi, around 500km east of the capital Algiers, Algerian radio said.
The plane was carrying 99 passengers including soldiers and members of their families, as well as four crew members, the source told AFP news agency.
"There were no survivors," the source added.
Witnesses in the area told the Associated Press news agency that the plane clipped a mountain and then crashed.
